Custom Fireplace Mantels and Surrounds

Fall is when the fireplace starts getting used again. It is also when most people notice that the mantel does not fit the room, or that there is not one at all.

We build mantels and surrounds as one-off pieces, sized to the opening and the wall they sit on. A recent job in West Chester was a stained oak mantel over a painted surround, with the paint matched to the built-in cabinets already in the room so the new work reads as original to the house.

Reclaimed wood

Barn beams, old floor joists, salvaged timbers. If you have wood with history, we can turn it into a mantel. We handle the metal detecting, cleanup, milling, and surfacing. Reclaimed oak and chestnut both work well. Checking, nail holes, and saw marks stay in if you want them, or we can flatten and sand back to clean stock.

Pinterest boards, a photo from a magazine, a sketch. We have also had clients send AI renderings of their own living room with a mantel dropped in. Any of it works. What we are looking for is the shape, the proportions, and the finish you want. From there we can tell you what it takes to build.

Matching what is already in the room

Most rooms already have millwork, cabinets, or trim we need to work around. We match paint and stain to existing finishes so the fireplace does not read as an addition. On the job above, that meant matching the surround to cabinetry that had been in the house for years.
